This easy Cheese Sauce has a lot going for it. It’s easy to make, practically no fail and is so versatile. ย I make it regularly, and use it onย ย anything from Lasagna, Cannelloni, poured over ย steamed or roasted Vegetables and Pasta Bakes – it would also be great served with Silverside.
It’s another one of my Mum’s recipes because let’s be honest, aren’t our Mum’s recipes often the best? ย The key to this sauce is to keep it moving – you need to start stirring/whisking it as soon as the heat is turned on. ย After only 3 – 4 minutes you will have a smooth, delicious and cheesy sauce. ย Enjoy!
Easy Cheese Sauce - Back to Basics
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of plain flour
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 cup of grated tasty cheese
- ¼ cup finely grated parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper - Use white pepper if you don't want black pepper flakes in you sauce.
- ½ tsp of nutmeg
Instructions
- Place all ingredients into a saucepan (not over heat).
- Turn on the stove to a medium high heat and using a whisk stir constantly until mixture thickens just below boiling point. This should only take a few minutes.
- Remove sauce from stove top and if not using immediately, cover the top with a piece of cling film to stop a skin from forming.
If you have recipe suggestions for my Back to Basics series I would love to hear them!

I often make cheese sauce too. My kids will eat anything if it’s smothered in a good cheese sauce. However I am the queen of lumpy cheese sauce – I’ve never managed to get it smooth when cooking it on a pan (thank goodness for my thermomix). I never thought of using two cheeses though – great tip x

My Husband loves cheese sauce over veggies as a treat. I think I’m going to have to dedicate an evening to making some of your fabulous recipes including that peanut butter slice!

This looks incredibly user friendly, I love that you don’t have to keep stirring it for ages.

Yep, before making this I was always put off by how long you needed to stir the sauce for. This is VERY easy ๐

Who doesn’t love cheese sauce?!?! Thank you, it’s still a bit of a work in progress ๐

Ooo I like the idea of using nutmeg in there. I usually use bay leaves, not sure why but they’re annoying to fish out.
Kim @Landofzonkt
How funny it’s all in & whisk I’ve always done it the white sauce way… Butter flour, slowly add milk etc this sounds way better!
Thanks for the recipe Hun & linking up. xx
