Something strange has been been going on at our house over the past few weeks.  After a few months of flat out refusing to have a sleep during the day, our newly turned three year old big boy has suddenly decided he wants to ‘have a rest so I will grow big’ during the day.  The even bigger shock is, he announces this shortly after we put his baby brother to bed – unbelievable I know! Now that I’ve suddenly found myself with a new found freedom as well as a couple of hours (yep they both sleep that long) to myself.  After actually sitting down and eating a proper lunch for a change and doing a few jobs around the house, I’ve been using the time to have a little fun and experiment with different recipe ideas that I’ve been thinking about for awhile now and have been part of quite a lengthy ideas list sitting in the back of my planner.
I haven’t experimented a lot with mug cakes in the past – aside from my Chocolate and Nutella Mug Cake and I was curious to see how one would turn out with the addition of chopped up chocolate bars – and the Mars Bar Mug Cake was born!
This recipe is based on my Chocolate and Nutella Mug Cake recipe, and I just played around with the amount of ingredients used. Â This recipe makes enough to fill two large teacups, so you can either share the Chocolate and Mars Bar love with someone else, or do what I did and hide the other one in the fridge to reheat the next day!

Mars Bar Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons of self raising flour
- 3 tablespoons of caster sugar
- 2 tablespoons of cocoa
- 3 tablespoons of milk
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 egg
- 1 Mars Bar
Instructions
- Cut the Mars Bar into small pieces
- Place all of the ingredients - apart from the Mars Bar into a small bowl and whisk together.
- Add the Mars Bar pieces and stir through.
- Divide the mixture evenly between two mugs - or tea cups if your prefer! Make sure the cup/mug is no more than ½ full as it will rise.
- Place in the microwave and cook on high for 1 ½ - 2 minutes depending on your microwave and cup size. My cakes took just 11/2 minutes.
- Allow cake to cool slightly before adding a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and enjoy!

This Mars Bar Mug Cake tastes AMAZING! Â The cake itself it pretty rich but the melted Mars Bar pieces throughout and when served with vanilla ice cream really help to balance it. Â It’s certainly not a dessert for those watching their calories, but as for a special occasion – e.g two children asleep at the same time, it’s perfect!
What have your kids done to surprise you before?
What kind of mug cake do you think I should try next?

Could you bake these in a conventional oven? If so, how long do you think they would need? I love your recipes!!!
Lauren
Yes I think you could, I’d pop the mixture into ramekins and bake on 170 degrees for 5 – 8 minutes and then test.

Oh my gosh!!! This was so delicious even my husband that doesn’t have a sweet tooth ate it…
