It’s early and my boys are still asleep as I make my way quietly down the stairs. The darkness of the night is still here, I am invisible as I feel my way along the hallway.
I sneak into the pantry, turn on the kettle, ready for my first coffee of the day. Our faithful dog is outside patiently waiting at the door. He knew I was coming, and patiently waits for his breakfast.
Coffee in hand I quietly open the door and walk outside. The air is cool and crisp and I feel goosebumps quickly appear on my exposed arms and legs.
I sit in my chair, pull my legs into my chest and hold my mug with both hands. My mind is clear, the nagging thoughts and ideas that are normally with me are silent. Sitting here alone, in the darkness and silence of morning I am peaceful. I am happy.
I watch the sky begin to lighten on the horizon. It starts with the smallest slither of light appearing above the trees. The dark night sky fades into a navy blue, then violet, before there are hints of pink and yellow streaking through.
Life begins to stir, in the distance I hear a kookaburra announce a new day is here.
I continue to sit in my chair, continuing to absorb everything around me.
I slowly sip my coffee, the contrast of the hot liquid agains the cool air giving me energy. All of my senses are heightened, and I feel my body awakening.
Finally the sun silently moves into view. A new day is here.
