Let’s face it, when you are a kid birthdays are all about the cake – and for me they still are! My sister and I would spend weeks pouring through our Mum’s cake books trying to decide which elaborate design we wanted – never giving much thought to the time and effort required to make these creations. Now that I’m a Mum too, I’m all too aware of just how stressful it must have been for our poor Mum trying to create the birthday cakes of our dreams – I know how stressed out I’ve been the few times I’ve made cakes for the boys!
This is where Cake 2 the Rescue comes in. Cake 2 the Rescue is a Queensland based business which supplies EVERYTHING (yep you read that right!) that you need to create an amazing, delicious and memorable cake for your next celebration. Cake 2 the Rescue began with the goal of taking the stress out of creating magnificent home made birthday cakes both kids (and adults!) will love.
We don’t need an excuse to make a cake, so we were thrilled when the lovely Baker Girl Lou asked it we would like to review her Rocket Cake Kit. Given the boys are a wee bit obsessed with ALL forms of transport, to say they were just a little excited was an understatement!
Our cake kit arrived super fast (the next day) and upon opening the box, I was immediately impressed by it’s contents, with every little detail required to make the cake included – from a box to bake it in, all the ingredients, a cake board, decorations, a server and even candles! The boys on the other hand were stoked to see foam packing they could play with.
I decided to put the cake kit to the ultimate test and put it together with the ‘help’ (and I use that term VERY loosely) of my two eager littler helpers – you can watch us putting it together here.
Making the cake itself was REALLY easy and very toddler friendly. All we needed to do was add a couple of pantry ingredients to the cake mix included, and our cake was ready to be put into the oven in no time.
After allowing the cake to completely cook (and battling to keep the boys away from it) I easily removed it from the baking box provided and was ready to start decorating. I’m always a little nervous when it comes to shaping cakes, but thanks to the template provided, there was no stress involved.
I have to admit we couldn’t resist sampling the cake off cuts whilst we put the cake together, and we all loved flavour and thought it tasted great even without any icing!
All of the instructions to decorate the cake are included, and we also checked out the online tutorials by the incredibly talented Baker Girl Lou. These tutorials are great and include everything from tips on how to ice your cake with frosting and fondant, how to create the perfect character face and even how to create perfect cake corners.
Cake 2 the Rescue has thought about every single detail of their cakes, and it was so lovely to watch the boys smiles grow as ‘their’ rocket began to come to life. They were even able to help out with jobs such as rolling the fondant and attaching the ‘fire’ to the rocket’s engines.
In what seemed like no time at all, our cake was completed and I had to admit I was pleasantly surprised by not only how little time it took to create but also how much I enjoyed the experience of putting it all together – even with the assistance of the boys.
