When most people think of superpowers, they imagine the ability to fly, leap over buildings or to even have x-ray vision. Superpowers are associated with images of tall, muscular, superheroes wearing capes and masks, however when I think of superheroes I think of our two year old son..
I know this sounds strange, how can a toddler have superpowers? Right from the beginning though, he showed us his super strength. As a 5 day old blastocyst he was transferred into my body, a transfer which no one, including our Doctor thought would be a success, yet he proved us all wrong.
He clung on when I had surgery at 13 weeks to help keep him safe. He continued to amaze us with his resilience when we experienced our first big scare at 17 weeks. At 22 weeks when his journey was made all the harder with the diagnosis of yet another pregnancy complication, he drew on his superpowers to hold on tighter. Even at 25 weeks when my body threatened to evict him, his super stubborn streak came through, he dug his heels in and stayed safe inside me for another 5 weeks, until he was born at 30 weeks gestation.
Our Super Boy continued to amaze us with his strength and courage over the following six weeks he spent in hospital. He didn’t let the obstacles he was faced with deter his will to come home with his Mum and Dad. He amazed us all when he came off all oxygen support at just 5 days old. He took to breastfeeding with gusto when he was just 33 weeks old. During the weeks when his little body let him down and he would forget to take a breath or his heart would beat too slow, he showed us his incredible will power to keep on going.
During the first years of his life, he has shown us bravery and courage with each procedure and test he has endured. He has shown steely determination, particularly during his first year, to not let his size hold him back from trying to keep up with his peers. He has grown into a happy, healthy and very adventurous two year old, who still has those superpowers he displayed right from the beginning as well as few new superpowers he has picked up along the way.
